Foreign direct investment (FDI) has been rapidly increasing in Korea after the economic crisis in 1997. This thesis examined the entry mode and performance of foreign investors by investigating the foreign investment companies in Korean auto part industry. The main purpose of this thesis is to extend the understanding of global manufacturing strategy by analyzing the networks, classifying the configurations and identifying the capabilities. The design and operation of international manufacturing networks is an increasingly important issue for multinational corporations (MNC's) faced with rapid changes in global market opportunity and competition.
Characteristics of entry mode, performance and R&D expenditure of 115 foreign invested companies in Korean auto part industry were analyzed quantitatively. The one-way ANOVA test was used to analyze performance differences. The result shows that the operating income to sales was higher for the greenfield-investment than for the merger and acquisition. However, there were no performance differences caused by nationality of MNC or share possessed.
In addition to the quantitative analysis, four leading global auto part makers were studied in detail to view their Korean subsidiaries' strategic role from the perspective of parent companies' global strategy. Using Ferdows' model, we identified the strategic role of each subsidiary and its evolution.
우리나라에 대한 외국인직접투자는 90년대말의 외환위기 이후 급속하게 증가하여 왔다. 본 논문에서는 국내 자동차부품산업을 대상으로 외국인투자기업의 진입유형과 성과에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 빠르게 변화하는 국제시장에서의 기회와 경쟁에 직면한 다국적 기업들에게 국제생산네트워크의 설계와 운영이 점점 더 중요한 이슈로 부각되고 있는 상황이다. 본 논문의 주 목적은 진입기업의 네트워크를 분석하고, 구성을 분류하며, 역량을 파악함으로써 이처럼 중요성이 증대되고 있는 글로벌생산전략에 대한 이해의 폭을 심화하고자 하는 것이다.
국내 자동차부품산업에 진출한 115개 외국인투자기업의 진입유형, 재무적성과 및 연구개발투자현황에 대하여 정량적으로 분석한 결과, 신설투자의 경우가 인수합병보다 우수한 수익성을 나타내었다. 그러나, 모기업의 국적이나 보유지분은 성과에 대한 차이를 유의한 수준으로 설명하지는 못하였다.
이러한 정량적 분석 이외에 4개의 글로벌 선진 기업의 국내진출현황에 대한 사례연구를 실시하여 국내자회사의 전략적 역할과 진화과정을 Ferdows의 모델을 활용하여 모기업의 글로벌전략의 관점에서 비교분석하고자 하였다.
