To stay competitive in the global market, firms must change the way they view their traditional business functions. As firms are constantly being pushed to their limits in the sense of cost savings, experts have begun to realize the potential in logistics management and have started to see it as a source of competitive advantage. One of the main themes in this logistics management is logistics outsourcing, also called third party logistics.
In this paper, we focus on the values of contract flexibility in the logistical outsourcing decision focusing on demand variability. Through previous studies we were able to set up mathematical models that represent the costs when the logistics activities are conducted in-house and when they are outsourced to a third party. Due to the complexity of the problem that included lost sales cost, we used numerical examples to see how the logistics costs differ in various situations.
Major findings and results of this study are summarized as follows. First, under different demand patterns, ordinary and seasonal demand experienced the biggest cost savings. Second, the flexibility of the outsourcing contract, which depends on the number of adjustments in commitments, had the biggest impact on cost savings under seasonal demand compared to ordinary and divergent demand. Finally, the capital charge related to inventory has a certain effect on the decision of outsourcing.
We expect that this research will help in the coordination between users and providers of the third party logistics services when dividing the benefits earned from logistics outsourcing.
최근 들어 기업의 물류 기능은 새로운 이익을 창출하고 경쟁적 우위를 유지시켜 줄 수 있는 최후의 개척분야라고 불리며 주목을 받기 시작했다. 전통적으로 물류는 경쟁적 우위를 가져다 줄 수 있는 잠재적 원천이라기 보다 고가의 필수불가결한 활동으로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 경쟁이 치열해지면서 기업들이 비용을 절감하는 방법을 찾기 위해 다양한 노력을 하는 동안 구매, 생산, 판매, 그리고 물리적인 유통시스템을 넘어선 고도의 활동을 포함한 개선된 물류의 필요성이 대두되었다.
본 연구에서는 제3자 물류의 서비스 중에서도 창고보관 서비스에 초점을 맞추어 여러 상황에서의 비용절감 효과를 살펴보고 계약구조의 유연성이 그 효과에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 우리의 연구모형의 경우, 사전 계약사용량(commitment)이 있는 제3자물류의 창고보관 계약에서 큰 변동성이 없는 일반적(Ordinary) 수요가 가장 큰 비용절감 효과를 얻고, 계절성(Seasonal) 수요인 경우에도 비교적 큰 절감효과를 보여주었다. 그러나 일년 내내 크게 변하는 변동성(Divergent) 수요의 경우 제3자물류 서비스를 도입하더라도 다른 수요들에 비해 큰 이익은 얻지 못하는 것으로 나왔다. 또한 계약 구조가 유연하게, 즉 사전 계약사용량(commitment)을 자주 바꿀 수 있도록 이루어지는 경우에 계절성(Seasonal) 수요가 다른 수요 패턴에 비해 더 큰 비용절감 효과를 보였다. 변동성이 크기 때문이라고 하기에는 변동적(Divergent) 수요의 경우 계약구조의 변화가 비용절감 크기에 영향을 거의 미치지 않는 것으로 보아 이는 어느 정도 예측이 가능한 계절성(Seasonal) 수요가 사전 계약사용량(commitment)을 몇 번 조정할 수 있는 계약구조에 잘 부합되기 때문이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 결과는 앞에서 언급한 제3자 물류업체와 사용자간의 계약에서 비용측면에서의 조정과 협력이 어떤 식으로 이루어지는지에 대한 실마리를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
