An AutoRate Fallback (ARF) scheme has been widely used as rate adaptation in commercial wireless local-area network (WLAN) products. The ARF scheme is a heuristic rate adaptation scheme to select the data transmission rate by keeping track of previous trans-mission states from one timer and two counters. If two consecutive frame transmissions fail, the transmission rate is reduced to a lower rate. If either ten consecutive frame transmissions are successful or the timer expires, the transmission rate is increased to a higher rate. The timer is reset when the transmission rate is changed and then is restarted. The ARF scheme is simple and applicable regardless of access mechanisms. However, it can not react quickly in a fast time-varying wireless channel environment. In this thesis, we propose an analytical model for the ARF scheme based on a 2-dimensional discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) model. The proposed analytical model provides a generic form by considering the consecutive success limit, the consecutive failure limit, the transmission rate set, and the retry limit. Based on the proposed analytical model, we analyze and evaluate the performance of the IEEE 802.11a DCF WLAN system using the ARF scheme in terms of goodput, average transmission delay, average retransmission trial, and drop rate.
