We investigate how the firm's birthright enables it to survive and grow amid an industry consolidation, which in particular is influenced by a non-disruptive technological innovation. The firm's birthright is defined as its reputation and product quality at the beginning of industry consolidation. We developed a system dynamics simulation model to replicate the actual process of the Korean mobile telecom industry's consolidation in mid-1990s and early 2000s.
Our analysis indicates that a firm's birthright, especially, its reputation, was the determining force in the industry. That is, in the face of `competence-enhancing' disruptions, firms starting with strong birthrights eventually dominated the market. We consider a more serious question, whether the impact of the firm's birthright is so strong as to make it almost impossible for newcomers without well-established reputation in the market to survive along with the established players. To answer the question, we conducted a what-if analysis with the system dynamics simulation model. It suggests that although it is not impossible for a firm lacking reputation to eventually survive in the market, it is indeed a daunting task, which also depends on how effective is the concerted strategy to enhance the firm's reputation in a relatively short period of time.
We also investigate the impact of government regulations and policy on evolutionary dynamics of Korean telecommunications industry through the proposed system dynamics model. The results strongly suggest that government policy can have strong and enduring effects on the industry evolution.
A deep and profound case study on Korean mobile telecommunications industry has been performed and it gives valuable insight on the relationship between types of technological innovation and role of firm's birthright. The case study and its results provide sound background for system dynamics simulation analysis. At the end, Managerial implications and strategic suggestions based on both of case study and simulation analysis are presented.
기업의 태생권이 비 단절적인 기술 혁신(non-disruptive technological innovation)으로 인한 산업 통합 과정에서 어떻게 기업의 생존과 발전에 기여하는 가를 연구하였다. 기업의 태생권은 기업 명성과 제품 품질로 정의되었으며, 이는 산업 통합이 시작되는 초기에 작용한다. 이 연구에서는 시스템 다이나믹스 시뮬레이션을 통해 실제 한국 이동 전화 산업에서 발생했던 현상들을 재현하였다.
연구의 결과는 기업의 태생권, 특히 기업 명성, 이 경쟁력-강화적(competence-enhancing) 기술혁신 상황에서 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 시사한다. 즉 초기의 강력한 기업 명성을 가진 기업이 경쟁력-강화적 기술 혁신 상황에서 결국 산업 전체를 지배하였다.
이러한 결과를 바탕으로 다음의 좀 더 심도 있는 질문에 대한 답을 구하였다. '기업 태생권, 즉, 기업명성,의 영향력이 그렇게 강력하다면 태생권이 약한 후발 기업이 경쟁에서 살아남은 것은 불가능한가?'
이에 대한 답을 구하기 위해 시뮬레이션 모형을 이용한 what-if 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과 비록 후발 주자가 살아남는 것이 불가능한 것은 아니나 이는 매우 어려운 일이며, 살아남기 위해서는 단기간내에 기업 명성을 효과적으로 올릴 수 있는 수단이나 방안이 필수적이라는 결과가 도출 되었다.
이 밖에 주요 연구 주제와 함께 한국 이동 전화 산업에 대한 정부 정책의 영향도 함께 탐구되었다. 시스템 다이나믹스 시뮬레이션을 통한 시나리오 분석 결과 단말기 보조금과 독점 기업(SKT)에 대한 시장 점유율 규제와 같은 정부 정책은 장기적이고도 의미있는 영향력을 산업의 발전과 경쟁 양상에 가지고 있다는 것이 드러났다.
