Low-temperature combustion systems limit combustion temperatures to levels at which $NO_x$ and soot formation rates are low. These systems can be roughly divided into two categories: one in which the injection timing is extremely early so that the combustion phasing is dominated by the kinetics of the chemical reactions, and the other in which the control of the combustion phasing is closely coupled to the fuel injection event. In the former category, the fuel and air are thoroughly premixed, so that at the start of combustion the mixture is near homogeneous and characterized by an equivalence ratio φ that is everywhere less than 1. Such systems are generally termed homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) systems. Low combustion temperatures are achieved by pre-mixing to very lean equivalence ratios ( φ < ~~ 0.5). In contrast, for the second category, the low combustion temperatures are achieved by high level of charge dilution. Such systems are termed low-temperature diesel combustion system. The inteval between the fuel injection event and the start of combustion preclude thorough pre-mixing, and significant regions exist where φ > 1 at the start of combustion. Accordingly, a large fraction of the heat is released in a mixing-controlled process.
In this study, HCCI combustion has been investigated in a single cylinder optical engine. The analysis of spray penetrations with various injection angle and nozzle diameter show that the small injection angle is required to resolve the spray-impingement problem, which is occurred due to low ambient density for early-injection condition. The flame visualization using an intensified camera as well as the results of exhaust-gas soot and $NO_x$ emissions indicate that injection timing should be advanced up to early intake stroke to achieve thorough HCCI combustion. In addition, a two-stage injection strategy, which is a combination of the early-injection for main injection and the late-injection for ignition promoter, is applied for the practical purpose.
Moreover, the low-temperature diesel combustion has been investigated as adopting the intake charge dilution. Diluting the intake charge lowers the flame temperature T due to increased heat capacity associated with the inert gases so that it offers the potential of avoiding both soot and $NO_x$ formation. The calculated adiabatic flame temperature is correlated with $NO_x$ emission and peak soot luminosity. The source of the CO emission in low-temperature diesel combustion regime is clarified as an under-mixing, so that the flow structure deformation with swirl affects the in-cylinder distribution and engine-out emission. The heat release analysis indicates that a large portion of the combustion and emissions formation processes is still dominated by the mixing-controlled phase rather than the premixed phase. Thermal efficiencies calculated for each dilution level and injection timigns provide guidance as to the appropriate combustion phasing and practical levels of charge dilution for this low-temperature diesel combustion regime.
A postulated combustion progress in φ - T plane is presented for HCCI combustion and low-temperature diesel combustion together with the conventional diesel combustion. The paths show low-temperature combustion in diesel engines has a potential of simultaneous soot and $NO_x$ reduction, while the CO emission as the product of incomplete combustion is minimized.
