Many large diversified firms maintained, or even broadened, their widths of technological capabilities, while they were narrowing their scopes of business portfolio under the flag of "Back-to-basic". According to previous research, this phenomenon was caused by the negative correlation between business diversification and firms ' profitability, and positive correlation between technological diversification and firms' growth and profitability.
However, the determinants of technological diversification have been less studied than those of business diversification. Using a longitudinal database of Korean Manufacturing firms which had applied for at least one patent from 1991 to 2000, this article investigated the determinants of technological diversification. The level of technological diversification was measured by the Entropy Index using the number of patents applied by firms with respect to technological area.
The empirical evidence suggests that the intention to business diversification, as well as the importance of external knowledge, has positive effect on the level of technological diversification. That is, firms diversify technologically not only to diversify into new business area, but also to increase absorptive capacity to absorb external knowledge. The result also implies that technological regimes affect the pattern of technological diversification.
다양한 영역으로 사업 다각화를 했던 대규모 기업들이 ‘back to basic’이라 불리는 사업 구조조정을 실시하여 사업 다각화의 범위는 줄였지만 기술 다각화의 범위는 오히려 늘리거나 일정 수준으로 유지하는 정책을 펴고 있다. 기존 연구에 의하면 이러한 현상은 기업간 경쟁이 심해지면서 사업 다각화는 기업의 수익성을 악화시키는 반면에, 기술 다각화는 기업의 성장과 수익성 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 기술 다각화와 기업의 성과간의 연구에 비해 상대적으로 충분한 연구가 이루어지지 않은 기술 다각화의 결정 요인에 대하여 살펴보았다. 제조업 내 상장사들 중에서 1991년부터 2000년까지 특허를 1개 이상 출원한 기업을 대상으로 실증 분석을 실시하였다. 기술 다각화의 정도는 각 기업이 해당 기간 동안 출원한 특허를 이용해 엔트로피 지수로 파악하였다. 연구 결과, 기업의 기술 다각화는 기업 내부의 자금조달능력, 지식 축적량이 증가함에 따라 비선형적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 기업의 기술 역량이 클수록 기술 다각화가 증가하였으며, 마케팅 역량은 비관련 기술 다각화에는 양의 영향을, 관련 기술 다각화에는 음의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 산업 특성으로는 기업이 속한 산업의 수익성이 낮을수록, 산업 집중도가 높을수록 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 기업 외부에 확산되어 있는 지식의 중요성이 커질수록 이를 잘 흡수하기 위해서 기술 다각화를 하며, 기술적 체제에 따라 기술 다각화의 패턴이 바뀌는 현상도 발견하였다.
