The recent development in digital technology implies that the digital information, now residing in computers and networks, will expand into our physical environment, constructing a new information environment called Augmented Reality. As digital information becomes more and more material, in this environment, we as physical beings will have to interact with digital information using our whole bodies. The Augmented Reality environment, however, has only been realized in restricted experimental surroundings, and research about how people react to information in this environment, has been limited to certain experiment results. Unlike these, interactive art offers a more open possibility of interaction in a digital information sphere provided by the artist among the artist (the architect of the environment), the artwork (the environment itself) and the spectator (the participant). Merleau-Ponty has focused on the importance of the body’s involvement in perception from a philosophical perspective, and Embodied Cognition Theory develops that perspective in a more scientific method. Based on those two theoretical viewpoints, this thesis focuses on analyzing the function and meaning of the body in interactive art as a part of the interface, and examines how the body might function in an environment where digital information intertwines with our physical reality.
