With the integration of computers and wireless technologies Computer Mediated Communication allows people to communicate at different time without travelling distances. Although the Computer Mediated Communication media keeps expanding its genres and provides such a convenience in use, it is hard to reach the actual purpose of communication in keeping the interpersonal relationship and richness by sharing time and physical spaces. Especially using Computer Mediated Communication media at short distance between communicators brings up the problem of increasing virtuality. Answering Door and Bulletin Vending-machine has been developed as a location based communication style mediated by everyday things. Placing them in offline community such as university or office area is to fill up the limit from using online communication media, These are using voice recording for co-located and asynchronous situation at 1:1 and 1: multi relations. Using everyday things for the communication media is for providing the easier way to operate objects taking from its affordances as well as fun to use. For the Answering Door, when a visitor knocks the door the message from the host plays and ask him/her to leave the voice message. Afterwards, the messages from visitors can be play when the host is back. The design concept of Bulletin Vending-machine is at perceiving the new function- Bulletin board into vending machine. With a characteristic of location based communication, Bulletin Vending-machine deliver the ambient message through the physical spaces by recorded voice. For the user observation on their acceptability, we have taken two different ways- opened situation for long term observation to estimate the fitness for everyday communication style, and closed situation with scenario based for analysing reactions and behaviour on users depended on particular situation.
In conclusion, we confirmed the possibility of practical use of Answering Door and Bulletin Vending-machine. Also we discussed about the design approach from the study can be used for expecting easy and fun to use, as well as natural and intuitive interaction for offline communication.
본 연구의 범위는 오프라인 커뮤니케이션 방식의 이용에 있어 비동시적인 상황을 전제로 일대일과 일대다수 관계에 새로운 커뮤니케이션 방식을 제안하는 것이었다. 이는 일상 사물을 매개로 하는 것에 의의를 두었다. 장소 기반의 커뮤니케이션 방식을 통해 사용자로 하여금 연상작용을 불러일으키는 특성을 이용할 수 있었다. 이에 새로운 커뮤니케이션 매체로의 접근과 이용이 자연스럽게 일어났다. 오늘날 컴퓨터 기반 커뮤니케이션 방식이 갖는 정보전달 방식의 단점을 보완한 것이다. 또한 음성 녹음을 이용한 커뮤니케이션 방식으로 시각적 정보의 전달에 비해 인위적 접근을 감소시키는 반면, 전달의 은근성을 통한 자연스러운 접근이 가능하였다. 일상사물을 매개로 새로운 기능을 침투시키는 퍼베이시브 컴퓨팅을 바탕으로 그 활용 가능성과 디자인된 새로운 커뮤니케이션 방식에 대한 사용자 수용성을 평가해 보는 것이었다. 연구에서 의도한 사물이 갖는 본래의 행동유도성을 이용해 새로운 기능의 조작을 용이하게 하고자 함에 있어서, 가시적 메타포의 부재에 따른 사용자의 혼란을 관찰할 수 있었다. 즉, 부가적인 요소가 없는 기능만의 침투로는 새로운 매체로의 접근은 용이하나, 사용에 있어 한계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 앞으로, 제시된 연구의 아이디어를 바탕으로 오프라인 커뮤니케이션의 증가를 목적으로 일상사물을 활용한 새로운 커뮤니케이션 방식의 응용개발이 가능할 것이다.
