New product development and supply chain coordination have been thought as important issues in operations management area. But researchers have treated these two issues as separated fields of study. We investigate new product development and supply chain coordination with an integrative viewpoint. Especially, we present a framework of coordination for quality improvement and new product development with a viewpoint of decision-making structures.
Prior to further investigating our research framework, we first concentrate on compensation system which is very important strategic factor in new product development. We show that ideal compensation system must consider intrinsic values as well as extrinsic values. And we also show that ideal performance evaluation system must utilize more behavioral and qualitative factors such as leadership and mentoring for younger researchers, and bottom-up as well as horizontal evaluation schemes.
In order to investigate the proposed research framework, we focus on manufacturers and suppliers who engage in strategic relationships for quality improvement and new product development. Depending on the balance of bargaining power in the relationship, each partner’s resource commitment to these two activities may vary. This has implications for both manufacturer and supplier profitability. Therefore we investigate how variations in the structure of the decision-making process affect the performance of each partner in strategic collaborative relationship.
By considering a Korean telecommunication company as the case in point, we first develop a system dynamics simulation model to replicate the case company’s quality improvement and new product development activities in collaborative relationship. Then we calibrate our model by using of real data from the case company to confirm its validity and robustness, and conduct a scenario analysis. The analysis shows that decision-making sharing indeed plays an important role for increasing not only each player's profit but also total supply chain profit.
We also develop an optimal control model which describes supply chain coordination between a manufacturer and its supplier. By using of relevant problem solving techniques such as dynamic programming, we derive steady-state dynamics of decision variables. Then we conduct numerical analysis to further investigate dynamic behavior of decision variables. The result confirms that the sharing of decision making process between a manufacturer and its supplier really can increase total supply chain profit. Moreover, such an effect of decision-making sharing increases as current product's initial quality level increases. And we show that decision-making sharing can strengthen each partner’s resource commitment to both quality improvement and new product development.
