This thesis examines whether spot volatility has a positive impact on turnover (volume/open interest) reflecting the speculative trading activities in the futures market. Moreover, this thesis examines the effects of futures volatility and turnover on spot volatility, using the daily and intraday data of the Korea Treasury Bond futures market.
The methodologies of this thesis are as follows. First, the volatility of spot and futures market is examined by three methods; (1) the volatility estimated from the daily closing price using GARCH(1,1). (2) the volatility estimated from the intraday data - 5 minutes interval return using classical method. (3) the volatility estimated from the intraday data - 5 minutes interval return using GARCH(1,1). VAR is then constructed for these volatilities together with turnover. Finally, the relationship among these variables is discussed using Variance Decomposition and Impulse Response Function.
The intraday volatilities have more explanatory power than the volatility estimated from the daily closing return. The result using the intraday volatilities can be summarized as follows First, we find that spot volatility has a positive impact on turnover. Second, we find that futures volatility increases spot volatility.
