This study is about designing mobile phone display in consideration of elder people’s preferences by reason of their optical weakness. The research is closely connected with designing user friendly interface by considering user characteristics.
The criteria for first experiment were font sizes, font types, line spacing and background colors. With the experiment result, relative importance of each attribute and subjective preference were investigated by conjoint analysis. Secondly, an optimal display design for elder people was presented by response surface method on the basis of the result of conjoint analysis, other statistical analyses, and user interviews.
The result of the conjoint analysis showed elder people’s distinctive preferences for large font size in contrast to those of younger people. Font sizes was the most important factor for the elders in selecting mobile phone display with the figure of 67.25 percent followed by line spacing(15.68%), background colors(8.95%), and font types(8.12%).
In the results of response surface method, the elders generally showed the tendency toward larger font sizes than those on the current mobile phone displays. The result showed that the elders would take narrow line spacing for large font size while the younger twenties preferred font size of 2.5 millimeters through 3 millimeters and line spacing of 2.5 millimeters which are similar to current display design.
이 연구는 이동통신 단말기의 interface를 설계할 때 사용자의 특성을 고려하여 보다 편리한 단말기를 디자인하는 것과 관련된 것으로 장년층의 시각적 특성과 선호도를 고려한 휴대폰의 디스플레이 설계에 관한 연구이다.
여기에서는 먼저 글자 크기, 줄 간격, 글씨체, 배경색 등을 고려하여 실험을 진행한 뒤 conjoint analysis를 통해 각 속성의 상대적 중요도와 주관적 선호도를 조사하였고 그 결과와 기타 통계분석, 사용자 인터뷰 등을 바탕으로 반응표면분석을 수행하여 장년층을 대상으로 한 최적의 display design을 제시하고 있다.
컨조인트 분석을 수행한 결과 50대의 경우 휴대폰 디스플레이에 대한 주관적인 만족도에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요소로 글씨크기(72.01%)를 꼽았고 그 다음은 글씨체(15.23%), 배경색(6.42%), 줄 간격(6.34%) 등의 순으로 나타났다. 50대는 큰 글씨를 선호하는 경향이 있었는데 상대적 중요도와 선호에서 20대와 큰 차이가 있었다.
디스플레이의 가로길이, 세로길이, 줄 간격, 글씨크기를 고려요소로 수행한 반응표면분석의결과 50대의 경우 전체적으로 현재 많이 사용되는 휴대폰 디스플레이상의 글씨크기보다 더 큰 글씨크기를 선호하였고 줄 간격이 좁아지더라도 글씨크기는 큰 것을 요구하는 경향이 있었다. 20대는 50대와는 반대로 전체적으로 현재 많이 사용되는 휴대폰 디스플레이상의 글씨크기와 비슷한 글씨크기(2.5mm~3mm)와 넓은 줄 간격(2.5mm)을 갖는 디스플레이를 선호함을 알 수 있었다.
