Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is an unmanned vessel to investigate and survey the underwater environments. It is autonomously controlled by itself and has no physical connection with a mother ship. In this paper, the design of inner mechanical and electrical system and controller of a small AUV is presented. Then, heading- and depth-controller are designed. Results of experiments in water basin and simulations are included.
First, the AUV named ASUM is introduced. A single board computer is used as the main controller. Windows XP is installed as an operating system for fast development of control program. To realize the real time control in Windows XP environment, RTX (Real Time eXtension) commercial software is used. The main controller communicates with a sub-controller in real time by CAN(Controller Area Network). The sub-controller controls and drives actuators.
Second, Nonlinear equations of motion in 6 DOF of the AUV are derived. And Horizontal- and Vertical-plane motion linearizations are performed. Design of linear heading- and depth-controllers are followed.
Finally, Experiments in water basin are performed to verify these controllers.
