Electro-hydrodynamic disintegration of non-conducting liquid jets has been a topic of interest for a long time because of the possible application to fuel atomization. Recently, a series of experimental studies have been performed regarding the electro-hydrodynamic atomization of non-conducting liquids using the charge injection type nozzles. In general, spray current increases with increasing of liquid flow rate and input voltage. However, at the same time, the dielectric breakdown occurs either inside (channel breakdown) or outside (air breakdown) the nozzle depending on the input parameters. Therefore, it is important to find out the optimum operating condition for maximum electron charge.
In this study, as an extension of the previous experimental observations, the electro-charging performance (i.e., spray to total current ratio) of the charge-injection type nozzles has been predicted through numerical simulation. In the present simulation work, the method of Djuric et al. has been adopted, but with modification of the model for the charged particle radius in which the effect of the local charge density has been taken into account. The modified model represents the measured values better than the model of Djuric et al. where the radius (and hence the hydrodynamic mobility) of the changed particles has been considered to be a constant value throughout the calculation.
