There have been so many approaches to business process modeling, which can be categorized in two groups: event-oriented view and process-oriented view. Approaches from event-oriented viewpoint such as event diagram, event-condition-action table, and state transition model can describe the business process in a very detailed manner. However, event-oriented approaches do not provide easily comprehensible models for complex business processes. On the other hand, process-oriented approaches describe the target process as the flow model of information or physical entities combined with the lifecycle of participating resources. Techniques in this group include simple flow chart, IDEF3, UML activity diagram, ARIS eEPC, and so on. Due to the conceptual simplicity of process-oriented model, many commercial workflow management systems use this type of process modeling tools. However, process-oriented approaches have some trouble in describing business processes with sophisticate behavior in great detail.
This thesis proposes an approach to business process modeling by combining the strengths of both viewpoints. BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) specification, which was released recently by BPMI, provides a means to graphically describe business process from a process-oriented viewpoint, with high emphasis on detailed handling of business events. However, being a relatively new specification, BPMN still lacks in some important aspects of modeling regarding events, states, and business rules, when it comes down to the modeling of practical business processes. This thesis complements BPMN with more practical treatment of events and business rules. Also it is proposed to include the concept of 'state' on top of BPMN, so that one can combine intuitiveness of process-oriented view and detailed modeling power of event-oriented view.
비즈니스 프로세스 모델링에는 매우 많은 방법들이 있는데, 그것은 2그룹에서 분류될 수 있다: 이벤트 중심의 관점과 프로세스 중심의 관점. 그러나, 프로세스 중심의 방법들은 복잡한 비즈니스 프로세스를 좀 더 세부적으로 기술하기에는 몇 가지 문제점을 가지고 있다. 이 논문은 두 관점의 장점을 결합한 비즈니스 프로세스 모델링 방법을 제안한다. 최근 BPMI에 의해 발표된 BPMN은 비즈니스 이벤트를 모델링의 중요한 요소로 보고, 프로세스 중심의 관점으로 비즈니스 프로세스를 시각적으로 기술한다. 그러나, 상대적으로 새로운 specification인 BPMN은 실제 비즈니스 프로세스를 모델링 할 때, 모델링의 중요한 요소인 이벤트, 상태, 비즈니스 룰에 대한 표현이 부족하다.
이 논문은 이벤트와 비즈니스 룰을 좀더 실제적으로 다루는 측면에서 BPMN을 보완한다.
또한 이 논문은 BPMN의 상위 개념에 상태 개념을 포함하여, 프로세스 중심의 관점의 직관과 이벤트 중심의 관점의 세부적인 모델링 파워를 결합할 수 있도록 해준다.
