Residual stress is analyzed for spiral seam-welding pipes, wherein significant residual stress is built up due to their manufacturing process of bending and welding. The results show that too large a size of the loading step or time step leads to a wrong stress distribution near the edge of specimen undergoing time independent elastic-plastic deformation due to the bending process. The effect of the bending process on the final residual stress around HAZ turns out to be negligible because the residual stress resulting from the bending process is relaxed due to high temperature during the welding process. Away from HAZ, on the other hand, the temperature rise is not high enough for stress relaxation, and the bending process yields a final residual distribution very similar to stress distribution in the beam undergoing elastic relaxation of bending moment after elastic-palstic bending information. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the localization nature of the welding deformation enables one to model only a part of the entire structure.
