The objective of this study is to estimate structural deformation using strain data. In many cases, engineers measure in-plane strain to investigate fatigue or lifetime of a structure. However, whole structural deformation can be estimated from measured stain data using displacement-strain transformation technique. This technique uses modal transformation, which is composed of the structural displacement and strain mode shapes, in conjunction with the discrete strain data. These mode shapes can be obtained using finite element analysis for most realistic structures. A finite element model of an aluminum beam was used to calculate the modal matrices required by the algorithm. Strain data was obtained from FBG(fiber Bragg grating) sensors which provide the ability to measure strains at multiple points along a single fiber path. A cantilevered aluminum beam was simulated under various loading condition, and a laboratory experiment was performed on the same beam specimen instrumented with FBG sensor array. The beam was subjected to static and dynamic loading, and deformed shapes were reconstructed from the displacement-strain transformation algorithm. The results show good agreement with those measured directly in the laboratory.
