Mobile telecommunications, as one of the breakthrough technologies in the field of IT and telecommunications in the late 20th century that has brought fundamental changes to individual lives and managerial environment, has developed into the aggregate of state-of -the-art multimedia-related technologies putting together the concept of computing and networking. Therefore, it suffices to say that a mobile phone is one of the best exemplary embodiment of the commercial technology that indicate the start of the ‘Ubiquitous Era’ where in every electronic equipment lies the chip enabling both computing and networking.
This thesis aims to identify the factors that affect the standardization strategy in the telecommunications field through case studies on the relevant companies. With a view to review the standardization process through strategic use of patents in the mobile telecommunications field, case studies and analyses were done on cases such as Qualqomm(2G CDMA, Brew) for understanding individual standardization strategy and cases such as Erricson(2G GSM), IMT-2000(3G CDMA) through standardization organizations and patent pool, HPi and Samsung Electronics for understanding standardization strategy through coalitions and cooperation among companies with common interests.
The results show that the exclusive ownership of the essential patents related to the standard technologies have significant and competitive values from strategic and cash-flow related perspectives. The outcome of the case analyses also indicate that the standardization types of the prior arts in the market affects the decision regarding backward compatibility and that the types of ownership of the essential patents affect the openness of the relevant technologies, which in turn decide the four types of standardization strategies, that is, open migration, controlled migration, discontinuity and performance play. Based on the outcome of the thesis, practical suggestions for the Korean companies are offered in four areas related to technology, markets, management, and government policy.
20세기 후반 개인의 생활 환경과 기업의 경영 환경에 획기적인 변화를 초래한 정보통신 혁신기술 중 하나인 이동통신 기술은 컴퓨팅과 네트워킹 기술이 축적된 멀티미디어 첨단기술의 집합체로 성장했다. 이동통신 단말기는 디지털기술의 융합이라는 커다란 흐름 안에서 모든 전자기기 안에 컴퓨팅 능력과 네트워킹 기능을 포함시키는 것을 기본 개념으로 하는 유비쿼터스 시대를 개막하는 구체적인 상용화 기술의 가장 현실적인 예이다. 본 연구에서는 이동통신 분야에서 표준화 전략 추진에 영향을 미치는 요인들에 관하여 사례연구를 통하여 알아보고자 한다. 전략적 특허활용을 통한 이동통신업계의 표준화 과정에 대해 살펴보기 위하여 2세대 CDMA 퀄컴 및 퀄컴의 브루를 중심으로 한 휴대인터넷 사례를 통해 개별기업을 중심으로 한 표준화 전략에 대한 연구를 하고, GSM 에릭슨에 대한 사례, 표준화기구와 특허풀을 통한 IMT2000(3G)기술의 표준화 작업, HPi 사례 및 삼성전자에 관한 연구를 통해 기업연합에 의한 이동통신 표준화에 대한 문제를 살펴보았다. 사례연구를 취합 분석하여 특허권이 갖는 전략적 및 경제적 가치 측면과 연계하여 알아보고자 하며, 이동통신 업계에서 종래기술의 표준화 형태와 혁신기술의 핵심특허에 관한 지배구조 유형에 따른 기업의 표준화 전략 유형을 파악하고, 퀄컴에 대한 기술 종속화 현상의 발생원인에 대하여 살펴보고, 사례연구를 통해 얻은 시사점을 통해 향후 차세대 이동통신 표준화 과정에서 국내 이동통신 업계에 적합한 대안을 제시하고자 한다.
