A Nano-Actuator is an essential device for the scanning tip to approach the sample in the scanning tunneling microscope. A piezo-electric material has several advantages to be used for a nano-actuator, especially in low temperature operations. Linearity, reproducibility, nano-meter resolution, and reliability can be best fulfilled by using piezo-electric materials. We describe a newly developed nano-actuator and present preliminary results of displacement tests in the range upto several mm movements.
