Measuring corporate performances is of great significance, because it drives strategy. Performance is an explicit pillar of corporate strategy. Many companies work assiduously to select performance measures to better meet their goals, but these measures are not well understood. Companies can give analysts only limited description of what performance measures are and how much they are important. The need for measuring knowledge components has motivated the need for a variety of performance measurement methods. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) is one of them. However, it is difficult to lead to a sufficient consensus on corporate strategy at its implementation stage. Thus, it is necessary for the BSC measures to reflect strategic objectives in more systematic fashion. Furthermore, the weights of performance measures should be determined a priori to implement a BSC-based performance measurement system.
This dissertation focuses on the following research objectives: (i) to find the effect of corporate strategic choices on the weighting of the BSC performance measures and (ii) to find the important environmental variables in determining these weights and propose a system for weighting decision. Corporate strategies are explored within the framework of Miles and Snow’s taxonomy, where they are categorized into prospectors, defenders, analyzers, and reactors. The relative weights for each performance measure are calculated by the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process.
A sample of 219 companies can confirm the link between corporate strategies, environmental forces, and the weights of the BSC performance measures. These weights shift depending on the nature of challenges companies face. In the light of this empirical evidence, a system is proposed to help retrieve the BSC weights of the companies with similar characteristics. In order to measure the proximity between companies, a k-nearest neighbor technique is employed. This system can help find the weights of the performance measures for particular strategies.
This study empirically proves that corporate strategies and environmental forces are linked with the performance measures. Thus, we lay grounds on the model of performance measurement systems that can be more suitable under divergent strategies and environments. The proposed weights are useful for pursuing a particular strategy under different degrees of environmental dynamism and heterogeneity. The proposed system can help companies establish their own rational measurement systems by benchmarking competitors that operate under similar conditions.
현재의 기업경영에 있어서 성과를 측정하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 성과관리는 기업의 전략과 최고경영층의 기대를 조직 내에 소통시키는 역할을 하기 때문이다. 그런데, 기존의 성과 측정은 대부분 재무적인 측면에서 이루어져왔으나, 재무적인 측면에서만의 성과측정은 기업의 잠재된 가능성을 잘 설명하지 못한다. 재무적인 측면이외에 기업의 경제적 가치를 장기적으로 창출하게 해주는 요인들을 식별하고, 이를 관리하는 것이 필요한 것이다.
특히 기업의 전략적 목표를 반영하여 재무적, 비재무적인 측면에서의 성과를 측정하고자 하는 연구들이 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 Kaplan 과 Norton의 Balanced Scorecard를 중심으로 다양한 비재무적인 성과 측정도 포함하여 하나의 통합적인 성과측정 지표를 마련하였다.
한편, 이러한 성과 측정은 일반적으로 각 지표에 대한 가중치를 결정하는 과정을 필요로 한다. 각 성과 측정지표에 대한 가중치 결정에는 기업의 전략적 목표가 반영되어야 한다. 따라서 기업의 전략 입안 및 실천에 활용할 수 있는 성과 측정지표 가중치 결정에 대한 연구가 필요하다.
본 연구에서는 일반적으로 기업이 취하고 있는 전략과 환경변수에 따라 성과 측정 지표의 가중치가 구분되는지를 연구하였고, 이러한 실증 연구를 기반으로 도출된 변수를 토대로 가중치 결정 지원 시스템을 개발하였다. 이 시스템은 각 기업들이 보다 효율적인 성과 측정 시스템을 구축할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.
이러한 연구를 통하여 각 기업은 자신의 기업에 해당하는 전략과 환경에 따라 성과측정 지표에 대한 가중치를 결정하고 이를 근거로 각 해당 부서에 대한 성과를 평가하거나, 개인의 성과를 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
