Wireless LAN has become a hot topic in the telecommunications market. This thesis outlines the basics of the Wireless LAN as well as the most significant current issues. It also identifies key uncertainties including frequency assignment, technology evolution and market demand. Using the scenario planning approach, this thesis presents four scenarios: The Bridging Market, Bear Market, Bull Market and Stagnant Market Scenarios. The strategies by the telecommunication operators are made by compounding three main factors : marketing investment, hot spot investment and R&D investment. By evaluating the strategies considering operators’ core competencies and business environment, this thesis concludes that the ‘adapt the fastest’ strategy fits the wire operator, the ‘reserve the right to play’ strategy fits the wireless operator, and the ‘shape the future’ strategy fits the wire/wireless complex operator.
