Stereo matching has many ambiguities due to the ill-posedness of the problem. However most of the pixels can be matched precisely under appropriate assumptions. In this thesis, we search for the most suitable features for stereo matching, which are resultantly distinct edge pixels. Then we propose a new algorithm based on the region of support of the estimated distinct disparity.
This approach has much difference from other algorithms. First, it collects the region of support in a very selective way - between two distinct features with the same disparity only. After gathering enough region of support, the disparity is propagated in the homogeneous intensity region. Finally, the undetermined region determines the disparity through the modified membrane equation.
This approach has two distinct features. First, when compared to the conventional approaches, the computational complexity is very low since it does not contain the complicated optimization process. Second, it gives a very accurate disparity map if the initial features are matched correctly.
The proposed algorithm has been verified through experiments using both synthetic and real stereo images.
