Electrophoresis is defined as the movement of charged particles suspended in a liquid under the influence of an applied electric field. This phenomenon can be used for display technology. The electrophoretic image display (EPID) is a passive display based upon electrophoresis. In this thesis, the EPID is made and their optical characteristics are measured.
The EPID panel consists of three parts-lower plate, middle plate and upper plate. The lower plate includes row and column electrodes. The middle plates have specially shaped cells. When incident light is reflected from the inner part of the cells, the light is confined in the cells. The light confinement effect of the cells gives this EPID device many merits. Only one kind of particle in a suspending liquid can be used and no dye for coloring the liquid is needed. Positively charged $TiO_2$ particles suspended in a liquid are injected. Because the process is so simple, this device can be made in the usual Fab.. The life time of the device will be long because no dye is needed for dying the suspending liquid. The particles with various colors can be used and no color filter is needed, so this EPID will be able to provide colorful image without degradation of the color.
