This thesis contains comprehensive features of stagnation region flow and heat transfer under the free-stream turbulence for the first time as far as the author's knowledge. Parametric studies on the effect of free-stream turbulence are performed by using the organized inflow disturbances which mimic the free-stream turbulence. Details on the variations of flow and temperature fields by the amplified streamwise vorticity in the presence of organized inflow disturbances are presented. Three regimes of streamwise vorticity are found "damping", "attached amplifying" and "detached amplifying" regimes, and it is shown that each regime has its typical flow and thermal characteristics. Furthermore, the mechanism of breakdown of Reynolds analogy is also addressed under the organized inflow disturbances. It is found that the pressure fluctuations, the wall blocking and the Lamb vectors are responsible for the breakdown.
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of stagnation region flow and heat transfer with the free-stream turbulence are conducted where the length scale and intensity of the free-stream turbulence are selectively chosen based on the results of the organized inflow disturbances. The turbulence statistics of flow and temperature fields in the "detached amplifying" regime are collected. It is revealed that the velocity pressure and turbulence transport terms play significant roles, compared to the statistics of other canonical flows such as channel flow and mixing layer flow. A systematic analysis on the mechanism of wall heat transfer enhancement in the stagnation region with the free-stream turbulence is performed by using the DNS results. A new mechanism of the wall heat transfer enhancement and breakdown of Reynolds analogy is proposed where the vorticity dynamics and its direct consequences on the flow and temperature fields are examined.
In Appendices, details on numerics developed originally for the present numerical simulations are described. Methods of free-stream turbulence, optimized schemes and numerical boundary conditions are created by the author for better numerical efficiency.
