With the explosion of the Internet traffic and users, users` requirements for a variety of communication services ranging from best-effort applications to real-time high quality multimedia applications have emerged. Currently, most of the internet traffics are serviced by a best-effort mechanism that is based on a FIFO queuing, which provides the same quality of service(QoS) for all traffic types and causes the unpredictable packet loss and jitter characteristics.
With this service strategy, it is difficult to satisfy the diverse QoS requirements of users. Integrated Service and Differentiated Service have been proposed by the IETF as the solutions for this problem. But Integrated Service on Internet core networks has a scalability problem caused by per flow processing and per flow state information. Differentiated Service is also hard to guarantee end-to-end QoS because traffic flow of each packet influences each other in case of bursty traffic with the same priorities.
This thesis describes how Differentiated Service`s traffic is combined with MPLS, which provides high speed forwarding mechanism. And with the use of demand scenario on MPLS, it proposes a strategy for introducing QoS Scheme in MPLS-based network in two stages. From the Internet service provider`s point of view, it analyzes the business possibility based on the introduction of MPLS.
