A numerical analysis for heat/fluid flow in a molten carbonate fuel cell has been carried out. The flow passage between the electrode and separator surfaces, which is supported by the uniformly distributed trapezoidal shape props, is approximated as the porous medium. The effective permeability and the conductivity of the channel are estimated by a rigorous finite-volume analysis for a periodic module. The global temperature and flow fields are then obtained by using FLUENT.
At given gas usage rates, the fuel cell characteristics including the current density and temperature distributions are predicted successfully. The reaction rate affects the fuel cell characteristics and its effects are carefully examined and discussed in the thesis.
