Advanced computers are facing thermal engineering challenges from both high heat generation and reduction of the available heat removal surface area. In the absence of the proper heat removal, the working temperature of electronic components may exceed the required temperature level, which in turn increases the system failure rate. Hence, the employment of a high performance computing system requires efficient and compact cooling technology to provide reliable system operation
In this paper, a microfin array heat sink using the flow-induced vibration of a microfin array was experimentally investigated to quantify its effect on heat transfer enhancement in the laminar flow regime.
Based on the numerical analysis of a vibrating single microfin, the heat pumping model was developed to understand the heat transfer mechanism of the microfin array heat sink. The heat transfer enhancement was considered to be possible by the rigorous mixing of the fluid resulted from the microfin vibration. Under the structural constraints and fabrication limit, the maximum heat transfer rate was obtained at the intersection of the minimum thickness of the microfin and the constraint on the bending angle. It was also determined that the maximum heat transfer rate changed with the air velocity.
The quantitative characterization of the flow-induced vibration of the microfin was determined experimentally, which was totally different from the flow-induced vibration of the meso-scale structures. Due to insufficient information on the vibrating frequency and displacement, the microfin flow sensor was fabricated. The flow-induced vibration of the microfin was visually observed by using a high-speed motion analyzer. From the experimental results of the microfin flow sensor, it was determined that the microfin vibrates with the fundamental natural frequency regardless of the air velocity and the second mode vibration occurs over a certain air velocity. Also, the vibrating displacement of the microfin is not constant and increased with increasing air velocity. Saturation of the vibrating displacement occurs, which is resulted from the appearance of the second mode vibration.
Based on the comparative evaluation of the thermal performance, it was determined that the heat transfer enhancement in laminar flow regime is possible using the flow-induced vibration of a microfin array. A microfin array heat sink was fabricated by using the bulk-micromachining technology. The microfin array was initially deflected due to the built-in residual stress difference in two dissimilar thin films, which is essential for the flow-induced vibration. For comparative study, the various roughness element heat sinks such as a plain wall heat sink, a transverse slit heat sink, a parallel slit heat sink and pin fin heat sink were also fabricated with the same material of the microfin array heat sink. The thermal resistance of the microfin array heat sink was experimentally evaluated for different air velocities and compared with those of the roughness element heat sinks. It was determined that the increase in an air velocity from 3 m/s to 6 m/s provides a larger vibrating displacement of the microfin and this in turn improves the heat transport capability of the microfin array heat sink. Especially, for a fluid velocity of 6 m/s, the thermal resistance of the microfin array heat sink is measured to be 4.83℃/W and that of the plain-wall heat sink to be 5.32℃/W, which indicates a 9.2 % cooling enhancement. The thermal resistance of the slit-parallel heat sink is decreased by 2.63 %. Also, the microfin array was removed from the heat sink and its thermal performance was compared to that of the plain heat sink. It was shown that the increased surface area due to the microfin array did not affect the heat transport rate. As a result, it was determined that the flow-induced vibration of the microfin array heat sink plays a key role in enhancing the heat transfer rate in laminar flow regime.
Findings of this study clearly showed the possibility of improving the heat transfer rate by the hydrodynamic mixing in laminar flow, which was thought to be very difficult when the size of the structure is smaller than the boundary layer thickness. The most significant contribution lies not only in the quantitative findings of itself but also in shedding light on further research works associated with the flow-induced vibration of a microfin array.
또한, 평면히트씽크(a plain wall heat sink), 유동에 수직한 방향으로 표면조도를 조절한 히트씽크(a transverse slit heat sink), 유체유동에 수평하도록 표면조도를 조절한 히트씽크(a parallel slit heat sink) 및 두가지 효과를 동시에 고려한 히트씽크(a pin fin heat sink)를 제작하여 열성능 비교시험을 수행하였다.
