This study investigates whether investors value the option to abandon a firm. Theory prices abandonment option as an American put option a stochastic exercise price of exit value and a stochastic value of the underlying asset of future cash flow. The empirical results show that abandonment option makes a significant contribution to firm value beyond that made by expected cash flow. Regressions provide strong evidence that structure of asset and possibility of exercise affect the abandonment option value.
