In the paper, efficient packetization algorithms for packet loss resilience in MPEG-4 are proposed for real-time video transmission over Internet. The main target of proposed algorithm is delay-insensitive applications such as video on demand (VOD) and Internet broadcasting service.
Even at a low packet loss rate in Internet, the image quality of the received video is severely degraded due to inter-frame coding. Therefore, many packet loss resilience algorithms such as equal loss protection (ELP) and unequal loss protection (ULP) are considered popularly. In a packet loss channel, the perfect recovery rate is the most important parameter. ELP or ULP does not provide the sufficient perfect recovery rate. In the paper, two algorithms are newly proposed to improve the perfect recovery rate. First multiple frame packetization (MFP) provides much higher perfect recovery rate than that of ELP and ULP. And the unequal frame protection (UFP) gives higher protection to more important frames. It is noted that the proposed MFP and UFP can be applied to ELP or ULP, respectively.
Simulations are performed by properly combining the conventional algorithms (ELP and ULP) and proposed algorithms (MFP and UFP), and results are compared using experimental Internet packet loss traces with packet loss rates in the range of 0~20%. The simulation results demonstrate the proposed algorithms significantly improve the image quality.
