We present an efficient real-space multigrid method for first-principles electronic structure calculations in the framework of the local-density-functional approximation and the generalized gradient approximation. The Laplacian and gradient operators are discretized on mesh in real space using a higher-order finite difference method. The Poisson and Kohn-Sham equations are solved by a multigrid method that uses different relaxations on several grid levels. Testing various systems, convergence rates are found to be nearly independent of the number of real-space grids. For materials with localized d orbitals such as GaN, the number of iterations is not much increased. For charged Si clusters, the real-space method with use of nonperiodic boundary conditions gives exact total energies, as compared to plane-wave supercell calculations. The errors caused by the use of supercells are enlarged as excess or deficit charges from neutral clusters increase. In bulk materials where periodic-boundary conditions are employed, the Slater-Janak transition-state theorem is used to calculate the total energies of charged defects. We investigate several defects in GaN, including the Ga 3d electrons in the valence states. The effect of the Ga 3d electrons on the energetics of defects is discussed.
Including spin polarization effects, our real-space calculations is applied to oxygen-related defects such as oxygen vacancy, oxygen interstitial, and oxygen molecule in $SiO_2$. For the neutral charge state, the oxygen vacancy exhibits a dimer configuration with a Si-Si bond. However, for the doubly positively charged state, the oxygen vacancy undergoes a spontaneous structural transformation from the dimer configuration to the puckered configuration, accompanied with breaking a Si-Si bond due to hole capture. For the neutral and positive charge states, the peroxy linkage with a Si-O-O-Si bond is the lowest-energy configuration of interstitial oxygen atoms. However, for the negative state, the peroxy linkage is broken since the repulsive interaction between O atoms is induced. The stable atomic structure is formed with a double Si-O-Si bridge. $O_2$ for the neutral state is more stable than the peroxy linkage and the O-O bond length is nearly same with that of free $O_2$. For the doubly nagatively charged state, the O-O bond length significantly increases and two additional Si-O bonds are induced. Comparing with free $O_2$, $O_2^{2-}$ is easily dissociated with the barrier of 1.64 eV. The diffusion barrier of O ions is significantly low to be 0.11 - 0.27 eV, which is due to the competition between the repulsive O-O interaction and the attractive Si-O interaction. These values are in a good agreement with the effective activation energies in enhanced oxidation experiments.
The static dielectric response functions are calculated for both the room temperature bcc and low temperature 9R phases of Li and used for estimating the Coulomb repulsion parameters ($μ^*$). With a full dielectric matrix approach within the local-density-functional approximation, the values of $μ^*$ for bcc and 9R Li are estimated to be 0.157 and 0.160, respectively, much higher than most estimates for sp metals. The enhancement of $μ^*$ is attributed to the weak dielectric screening caused by the exchange-correlation effect and the peculiar conduction band structure with a large dip in the density of states. We also investigate the energy-loss spectrum of bcc Li. Using an N-point Padé approximant, we calculate the dielectric response function and produce the fine structure of the dynamic structure factor, in good agreement with available experimental data. The local-field and exchange-correlation effects are found to be significant in the particle-hole excitation region. The local-field effect gives rise to new peaks in the energy-loss spectrum, which are associated with a plasmon-Fano resonance and zone-boundary collective states.
