Due to profound social changes such as the arrival of the information society and transition into the knowledge-based economy, there have been increasing demands on the new type of education which helps to enhance the ability of obtaining, creating and utilizing various knowledge and related technologies. According to the demands on the new approach of the conventional instruction environments, the objective and philosophy, representing constructivism of the dominant paradigm in education together with postmodernism which is dominant theory in our social paradigm. In the constructivism paradigm, there has been a growing concern on the web as a new instruction method. But there are many problems on performing web-based education systems. Most of them only emphasize technical aspects without suitable instruction contents design for web-based education. So it is necessary to investigate the theorical backgrounds of web-based education and to develop effective curriculums.
The goal of this study is to investigate theorical backgrounds of web-based education and to construct a wed-based education model using diverse benefits of web as an instruction method As result of study, this study suggested wed-based design education system of constructivism that is a combination between the characteristics of web with constructivism theory and innovative design curriculum using benefits of web as education method. To investigate the effectiveness of this model, a web-based color design education system on the Internet as a case study was designed. This system emphasized the interaction between learner-instructor, learner-learner, and learner-contents in the education environment based on constructivism theory with multimedia characteristics of web. Students learned divers color theories, performed assignments and discussed related subjects of color with the instructor and learners with this system on the Internet. The results of the case study indicated several guidelines for web-based design education system design. They are as follows: 1) facilitation of successful interaction between the instructor and learner, 2) interactive curriculum design with abundant visual materials, 3) usable virtual work space and virtual gallery, 4) effective user interface design, 5) formation relationship between learner-instructor and learner-learner.
웹이 제공하는 가상의 학습환경은 학습자의 능동적인 참여를 유도하고 다양하고 현실성 있는 지식을 습득할 수 있게 한다. 이러한 가상학습에 대한 관심은 나날이 증대되고 있으며 실제 상당수의 웹 기반 교육이 시행되고 있다. 그러나 현재 시행되고 있는 대부분의 웹 기반 수업이 기술적인 면에만 치중하여 개발되고 있는 실정이다. 교육내용 측면에 있어서도 전통적인 교육 방법으로 설계된 교과 내용을 단순히 웹상에 변환시켜 놓은 형태에 불과한 방식으로 진행되고 있기 때문에 학습의 효율성에 있어 많은 의문을 낳고 있다. 이는 웹 기반 학습에 적합한 새로운 교과내용과 웹의 멀티미디어적 특성을 활용한 다양한 학습활동을 지원할 수 있는 방안을 모색하지 않은 채, 단지 새로운 교육환경으로써 웹 기반 교육을 성급히 활용하려는 경향에서 기인한 것이다. 따라서 웹 기반 수업에서 학습의 효율성을 높이기 위해서는 웹 기반 교육에 적합한 교과내용을 설계하고 다양한 상호작용을 통한 학습활동을 보다 효율적으로 지원할 수 있는 체계적인 교수·학습 설계가 이루어져야 한다. 웹 기반 교육의 체계적인 교수·학습 설계는 웹 기반 교육을 둘러싸고 있는 다양한 기저 이론들을 포괄적으로 탐색하고 활용방안을 모색하여 이를 토대로 설계될 때, 웹 기반 교육의 학습효과를 높일 수 있을 것이다.
효율적인 웹 기반 학습을 설계하기 위한 다양한 기저 이론들의 기반이 되는 학습이론으로써 구성주의 학습이론을 제시할 수 있다. 웹 기반 교육에서 이루어지는 능동적 학습, 다양한 정보원을 활용한 교육, 사회적 상호작용과 협동학습, 실제적 과제를 통한 맥락적 학습 활동들이 구성주의에서 강조하는 학습자 중심의 교육환경과 밀접한 관련을 맺고있기 때문이다. 즉 구성주의 교육이론과 웹 기반 교육에 대한 세심한 고찰을 통해, 웹 기반 교육에 있어 구성주의 교육이론의 활용 방안을 모색함으로써 보다 효과적인 교육환경을 구현할 수 있을 것이다. 특히 디자인 교육에서 웹 기반 교육을 효과적으로 활용하기 위해서는 새로운 교육매체로써 웹을 단순히 적용하는 차원을 넘어서, 구성주의 교육이론에 기초하여 디자인 교육의 특성을 효과적으로 반영함으로써 시대가 요구하는 디자인 능력을 육성하기 위한 새로운 교육환경을 창출할 수 있을 것이다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 디자인 교육의 새로운 요구에 부합할 수 있는 교육모델로써 구성주의 이론에 기초한 웹 기반 디자인 교수·학습 모델을 제안하고자 한다. 교수·학습 모델의 적합성을 검증하기 위한 사례 연구로서 디자인 교육의 기초과목에 해당되는 색채 디자인 과목을 선정하였다. 사례 연구에서는 웹이 주는 멀티미디어적 특성을 최대한 활용하여 구성주의적 학습이론에 기초한 창의적인 색채 디자인 교과내용을 개발하고, 이를 토대로 웹 기반 색채 디자인 교수·학습 시스템을 구현하여 실제 교육에 적용되는 전과정을 실행해 보고자 한다.
