Corporations have been forced to develop new types of organizational structures and performance management system in order to cope with the rapid changes of management environment in recent years. As the focus of sustainable competitive advantages has moved from the effectiveness of operational process to innovative product development, the importance of performance management system has been increased. In accordance with this situation, the balanced scorecard can be a useful tool for maintaining balance between result measures and process measures. It also can provide employees with effective motivation by giving shape to the strategic vision of the organization.
This study aims to develop a strategic design management system (SDMS) by utilizing the concept of balanced scorecard. Following intensive studies on the interrelationship between the concept of balanced scorecard and design activities, four corporate design groups that have different organizational structure have been investigated. Major findings are: (1) unconscious linkage exists between the organizational vision and performance measures, and (2) process measures which reflect stages between competence and results are insuffiaent in the performance measurement system.
SDMS consists of basic process of establishing and implementing the balanced scorecard, the conceptual and practical element of design strategy and necessary resources. It makes the standard and indicator of performance measurement to be consistent with corporate vision and strategy. It also helps designers implementing the strategy effectively. Four case studies have been organized to examine the applicability of the system. Selecting criteria for the case studies are the length of applying period and the size of the organization that affect the perspective framework and cause-effect relation among critical factors.
As a conclusion, the SDMS has following characteristics; (1) It can provide designers with the guideline for reinforcing design activities aligned with the ultimate corporate vision and objectives of the organization. (2) Top management get the live information about design activities implemented on the forefront. (3) The fundamental reason as well as the result of the business can be understood easily. And (4) With the least performance measures, the most effective performance management is achieved.
기업의 지속적 경쟁우위 획득에 있어 운영 과정의 효율성보다 제품 개발과정의 혁신성이 더욱 중요해짐에 따라, 단순한 성과 측정이 아니라 성과 관리의 중요성이 강조되고 있다. 이러한 상황에 발맞추어 균형성과표라는 과정 지표와 결과 지표사이의 균형을 목표로 하는 새로운 성과 관리 시스템이 제안되었다. 본 연구에서는 균형성과표의 개념을 활용하여 디자인 전략 경영 시스템을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 현장 조사를 통해 균형성과표의 기본 개념과 디자인 행위 간의 상관 관계 및 실제 기업의 디자인 조직 구조 및 전략적 운영실태를 살펴 보았다. 이를 통해 얻어진 주요 발견점은 다음과 같다. (1) 조직의 비전 및 성과 지표 사이에 무의식적인 상관관계가 발견되었다. (2) 조직의 역량과 가시적인 성과 사이의 중간 단계를 반영하는 과정 지표가 불충분하다. 본 연구에서 제시한 디자인 전략 경영 시스템은 이와 같은 시사점을 반영하여 디자인 전략의 개념적, 실행적, 인적 구성 요소와 기본적인 균형성과표 구축 및 실행 프로세스로 구성된다. 이를 통해 성과 관리의 기준 및 지표를 제안하고 이러한 지표들이 조직의 궁극적인 비전과 정렬될 수 있도록 한다. 본 디자인 전략경영 시스템은 다음과 같은 특성을 지닌다. (1) 디자인 행위가 궁극적인 기업의 비전과 조직의 목표를 달성하는데 효과적으로 정렬될 수 있도록 도와준다. (2) 경영진은 일선에서 이루어지는 디자인 행위에 대한 생생한 정보를 얻을 수 있다. (3) 가시적인 성과 뿐 아니라 그 근본적인 원인까지도 쉽게 파악될 수 있다. (4) 최소의 성과지표로도 효과적인 성과 관리가 가능하다.
