The evolutionary development of technology has impacted on the process of success and failure of a firm as well as an industry: changes in technology have shifted the hegemony in the memory device (semiconductor) industry from the US, Japan, to Korea sequentially. This process has been path-dependent and required individual player to show technological leadership as well as entrepreneurship. For instance, although being relatively new players in the business, in 1998 two Korean semiconductor companies ranked as the first and the second in the world TFT-LCD market in terms of market share.
In order to understand better the evolutionary development in the TFT-LCD industry, a research model is proposed, which takes into account firm's product-technology strategy, learning, strategic intent, and exogenous forces. Using this model, in-depth case studies on the semiconductor companies mainly in Japan and Korea are conducted.
Some of the findings from the research include companies in the TFT-LCD business have selected their initial product-technology strategies, based on their previous learning experiences related with particular products. This initial strategic choice and learning are interacted with the firm's strategic intent, which guides its final product-technology strategy. Sometimes external forces such as governmental intervention and parent company's policy affect the interaction among learning, strategic intent, and firm's product-technology strategy. This entire process proves path-dependent and dynamic.
기술의 진화 발전은 산업 뿐만 아니라 기업의 성공 및 실패의 과정에 영향을 준다. 기술의 변화는 반도체 산업의 메모리부품의 경우 미국, 일본에서 한국으로 그 주도권을 변화시켰다. 이러한 과정은 경로 의존적이었으며 각 기업은 기업가 정신 뿐만 아니라 기술적 주도권을 발휘하여야만 하였다. 예를 들어 1998년 TFT-LCD 사업에 비교적 신규 진입자인 한국의 두 반도체 제조사는 시장 점유율에서 세계 1, 2위를 차지하였다.
TFT-LCD 산업의 진화 발전에 대하여 보다 더 이해하기 위하여 기업의 제품-기술 전략, 학습, 전략적의도 및 외생력을 고려한 연구 모델을 제안하였다. 이 모델을 사용하여 일본과 한국의 반도체 회사에 대하여 심층적인 분석을 실시하였다.
본 연구의 몇몇 결과를 제안하였는데 그 중의 하나는, TFT-LCD 사업을 하고 있는 기업은 특정제품과 관련이 있는 과거의 학습경험에 기초한 초기 제품기술 전략을 선택한다는 것이다. 이러한 초기의 전략적 선택과 학습은 기업의 전략적 의도와 상호작용하여 기업의 최종 제품-기술 전략에 도달하게 한다는 것이다. 때로는 정부의 간섭이나 모회사의 정책과 같은 외생력이 학습과 전략적 의도와 기업의 제품-전략 사이에 영향을 주기도 한다. 이 전체의 과정은 경로 위존적이며 동적인 성격을 갖는다.
