VaR techniques are becoming increasingly popular, but how well do they perform in practice? This paper applies VaR models to one hundred ramdomly chosen stock portfolios over the period 1989-99, using a number of different techniques. The results are then compared. Important differences emerge, though none of the approaches employed is found to be superior on every account.
