The explosive growth of the Internet increases the attention to the implementations and performances of networked multimedia. Consequently, it is possible to transmit and process high quality multimedia data that requires high bandwidth network and powerful end-system. Video codecs used in videoconferencing like h.261 were designed for relatively low bandwidth network. MPEG-2 can meets high quality requirement including resolution, bandwidth and flexibility, and is important for several applications like high quality video conferencing and high quality video-on-demand. vic video conferencing system that designed by ALF model has software architecture based on composable tools which provides flexiblity and rapid prototyping without sacrifice of performance.
In this paper, we describe the integrated implementation of live MPEG-2 video modules into vic[McCanne95] and discuss implementation issues about MPEG-2 modules construction and system integration including requirements of encoding and decoding modules, thread control, buffer management. Researches for MPEG-2 transmision including traffic shapping, error control mechanism, and bandwidth adaptation are going on and can be adapted to this system. We conclude by describing live MPEG-2 transmission system and suggest future directions for research in the area.
