A single vortex ring ignited at birth was employed to investigate the nonpremixed flame-vortex interaction process. A burning vortex ring was generated by issuing gaseous fuel from a round nozzle and then igniting it by means of a residual flame sustained at the nozzle tip. Flow visualization was conducted through a time resolved Mie scattering, Schlieren and flame luminosity records. The distorted flame shapes caused by the interaction with a vortex ring were visualized with measurements of tip penetration and vortex width. The ring celerity as well as growth rate is largely altered due to the presence of the flame. The stream line pattern of a vortex ring was modified by heat release as predicted by Manda(1988). The presence of the flame also suppresses the turbulent motion of the ring, and consequently the occurrence of instability is retarded. The burning vortex ring moving vertically downward shows the negative growth rate due to its buoyancy effect and its small entrainment characteristics. The vertically upward vortex ring flame is characterized by the merging of the rear part of the vortex flame to the primary vortex and the formation of a spiral-like soot ring with a significant increase in the ring''s diameter. The comparison between vertically upward and downward evolving vortex flame indicates that flame-induced buoyancy exerts a significant effect on the entrainment process and the developing characteristics of the burning vortex ring. The favorable range of test conditions, in which flame extinction caused by excessive strain does not occur, was provided. It has been shown that the vortex core interacting with the nonpremixed flame comprises fuel and/or oxidizer, depending on the stoichiometric mixture ratio, forming a "reacted core" or "reacting core". The formation of a "reacted" or "reacting core" was visually observed at first in a real flame, as predicted by the earlier vortex pair analysis of Karagozian and Manda(1986). The reaction length of a burning vortex ring was also investigated. Contrary to the study of Johari(1993) on the burning fuel puff, the reaction length of upward vortex flame was increased as Reynolds number increases. This result indicates the decrease of fuel consumption due to a vortex-induced strain should be considered for the combustion modeling of a nonpremixed turbulent flame.'
