A simple model for pattern formation in vertically vibrated granular material is proposed. This model reproduces experimentally observed f/2 patterns including squares, stripes, hexagons, oscillons, oscillon structures and other transients. In addition, localized hexagonal structures which are not yet experimentally reported are obtained.
Moreover, an extended model with period doubling height exhibits f/2 flats with linear or decorated kinks.
