An optimal design method is adopted for a spacer grid in nuclear power plant. It is made of punched sheet metal, functioning as springs and dimples which support fuel rods. For stress analysis of the assembled structure, a typical cell out of the repeated pattern in the assembly is modeled using 4-node shell elements. A commercial code, ABAQUS, is used for detailed analysis of contacting phenomena with friction.
For the optimization, design variables are taken from geometric parameters representing the shape of the arch type spring part and the mating contact region with fuel rod. Several objective functions are considered in relation to mechanical functions and durability. Maximum von Mises stress, maximum contact stress, and wear rate per area are examples used. Interference between the spacer grid structure and the fuel rod is assumed prescribed. The objective functions are well optimized. The optimized shapes and resulting performances are discussed and shown very satisfactory. The method is illustrated as a good design tool for structures such as this that has rather complex mechanical behavior due to friction and wear.
