Due to ever changing customers' tastes, competitive environment in the market and advanced technologies, new philosophy was introduced to give solution to current manufacturing area; That is concurrent engineering. Concurrent engineering is a systematic approach to the integrated concurrent design of products and their related processes, including manufacture and support. The duration of product design is critical when a company releases a product to the market at the right time to gain advantage over competitors. So reducing product development lead-time to satisfy customer's ever changing tastes in timely manner is a very pressing and challenging task for the survival and growth of the companies. Duration of product development is dependent on the sequence of the processes and duration of each process. In this paper, we concentrate on the duration reduction of design process by using business process re-engineering(BPR) techniques and information technology. At the heading, design process is described briefly. Conceptual classification of design process is proposed. Six BPR Rules(Make activities concurrent, combine serial activities, eliminate the redundant activities, partition activities, Shorten the duration of activities, reallocate the activity) are provided and their application procedure is developed with the cost-benefit analysis for the reduction of duration. The proposed approach provides the basis for the structured BPR on the design process and quantitative evaluation of the project duration. Results of the computational experiments based on real field data shows the proposed formulation is reasonably accepted.
