Recent rapid development of electronic technologies and semiconductors has made it possible to perform diverse intelligent functions even in simple products. This change of products, in turn, made products invisible, which means to make it difficult to get required information on the use of products just by its shape: for even simple function, Users need manual and time to learn how to use. Under these new circumstances, User-interface design became more important and getting much attentions among software engineering, human factors, and product design.
For these reasons, various approaches from different area such as, computer science, cognitive science, psychology, and anthropology, have been developed and applied for User-Interface Design. Researches from those areas made significant contributions to the development of user-interface design. However each of them focused on just their own specific aspects of user-interlace, resulting lack of totality. In turn, Results and information from different areas are not well organized enough for user-interface designer to have a total picture of knowledge of user-interface design. Designers, particularly, need comprehenslve information from diverse aspects of User-interface design, including visual and verbal, qualitative and quantitative, still and video.
The purpose of thes study is to investigate for the fundamentals of user interface design and to develop systematic analysis tool for usability testing. The advantages and limits of user interface design are identified by reviewing the existing methods of analyzing usability studies. Findings from existing methods sets the framework for the development of new analyzing tool for usability testing. A computer program for analyzing video clip data of usability testing was developed and demonstrated by a case study of usability testing of audio component.
