Usability is playing a more important role in interactive products or systems (e. g., computer products) development, and it has become a primary factor in determining the acceptability and consequent success of the products. This thesis is concerned with the usability evaluation of interactive products or systems during the design and development phases. The first part of this thesis is devoted to investigating some different techniques and methods to evaluate the usability of interactive products during the design and development phases. Various evaluation methods have been tried ranging from formal to informal and empirical techniques. The classification of the usability evaluation methods and comparisons between these evaluation methods are presented. Some issues raised by the usability evaluation methods are also discussed. In addition, problems of selecting appropriate usability evaluation methods are raised. The second part is concerned with quantification of the product usability by the assignment of usability characteristics and criteria. An approach that can quantitatively analyze subjective data frequently acquired during the design and development phases is presented. The fuzzy weighted-checklist technique is used for the quantitative analysis. This analysis provides a composite measure, which reflects a figure of merit or degree of excellence for the product usability. The method for quantifying usability improvements in iterative design processes is also considered. The last part is concerned with comparative evaluation among several products, systems, versions, or interface designs. A structured methodology for selecting from among multiple alternatives relative to multiple usability criteria and measures is presented. The proposed model consists of two main phases: prescreening phase (expert judgment-based approach) and evaluation phase (user-based approach). A two-phase model is applied in a comparative evaluation of several interface prototypes for a database system used to analyze trip cases information of nuclear power plant.
