The major purpose of this thesis is to give military leaders implications that is related to the effective application of the Transformational/Transactional Leadership Style in the R.O.K.A.
To do this, it studied contingency relationship between transformational/transactional leadership style and other variables, that is, leader's personality, military professionalism, religion, task characteristics, military technology intensiveness, branches, higher leader's leadership style, subordinate's commitment, job satisfaction, moral, army training test results.
The measures of these variables are constructed from previous researches. 578 samples are obtained from 86 companies or batteries in the Korean Army and Airforce.
This study is the first attempt to apply the Transformational/Transactional Leadership Style to the Korean Army and Air Force.
The findings of this research can be summarized as follows.
First, all the transformational and transactional leadership styles, but passive management by exception, are positively correlated with commitment, satisfaction, morale, other performances. Second, risk taking propensity of leaders is positively correlated with charisma, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration dimension.
Third, the Transformational/Transactional Leadership Style is more effective in the companies with tasks of higher variety, lower analyzability and higher interdependence. And the Transactional Leadership Style is more effective in technology intensive branches.
Fourth, battalion commander's contingent reward and active management by exception are not only highly positively correlated with subleader's charisma, intellectual stimulation, individual consideration, but also have mutually positive or negative interaction effects.
As shown above, this study shows that the Transformational/Transactional Leadership Style and measure can be a useful tool for analyzing the leadership styles, especially of the technology intensive company or battery commanders.
In conclusion, the Transformational/Transactional Leadership Style is very effective in the military organization and the adequate combination of the two leadership styles depending on situations will lead to the highest performances in military organizations.
