In future networks, since it is very difficult to mathematically describe the characteristics completely for all the varieties of traffic, some traffic measurement schemes are necessary in order to characterize the ATM traffic streams as an alternative approach. This paper proposes a connection admission control(CAC) mechanism based on the measurement of cell loss ratio. Acceptable maximum bandwidth satisfying qualify of service(QoS) requirements is obtained by measuring the cell loss ratio in parallel virtual buffers. The proposed mechanism can appreciably improve the link utilization, compared with Saito's dynamic CAC mechanism based on estimating the upper-bound of cell loss ratio. The application limitations of Saito's and the proposed method are also discussed by computer simulations. Finally, we suggest a control mechanism to extend the proposed CAC mechanism for different types of traffic.
