Electromagnetic continuous casting(EMC) of tin with a Single-Loop Coil(SLC) was studied. The cross-sectional shape of SLC was rectangular. Tin melt was used in place of iron because it has a similar density but a low melting temperature.
Numerical analysis was carried out to design the suitable EMC coil and conditions. The magnetic field around the coil and the meniscus shape of the melt in the coil under static condition were measured to verify the numerical analysis. And then EMC experiments were performed with the experimental conditions(melt level ≒1.5cm, applied current=460A, frequency=15.8kHz) chosen by numerical analysis to produce bar of 4cm diameter. Conventional continuous casting was also done to compare the result with EMC. Macrostructure of bar was examined and an improvement of the surface quality of the cast tin bar was achieved by EMC with SLC.
