In this paper, we present the essential dimension of reductive groups. We propose a method to construct generically free representations of split reductive groups with finite or connected center, which gives upper bounds on the essential dimension of those groups. Combining our upper bound with previously known lower bound, we give the exact value of the essential dimension of some types of reductive groups. As an application, we determine the essential dimension of a semisimple group of classical type or E6, and its strict reductive envelope under certain conditions on its center. Among these, the result on groups of type B and D has an application to quadratic forms. We also give the essential dimension of some semisimple groups of type B for which we cannot apply our method using generically free representation.
이 논문에서는 가약군의 essential dimension에 대해서 다룬다. 우리는 중심이 유한하거나 연결된 split 가약군의 일반적 자유 표현을 구성하는 방법을 제안하여 가약군의 essential dimension의 상한을 제시한다. 우리의 방법으로 얻은 essential dimension의 상한과 이미 알려진 방법으로 구한 하한을 이용하면 특정 조건을 만족하는 가약군들의 정확한 essential dimension 값을 결정할 수 있다. 이 결과의 응용으로 중심에 대한 특정 조건을 만족하는 classical 혹은 E6 유형의 반단순군과 이의 strict reductive envelope의 essential dimension 값을 제시한다. 이 중 B, D 유형의 군과 관련된 대수 구조인 이차형식에 대한 응용도 소개한다. 또한 우리의 일반적 자유 표현을 이용한 방법을 적용할 수 없는 B 유형 반단순군들 중 일부의 essential dimension 값도 제시한다.
