Optical frequency combs have played an important role in precision signal generation field by coherently linking the optical frequency domain and the microwave frequency domain. The direct photodetection of the optical frequency comb results in a photocurrent pulse train that contains the repetition rate and its harmonics in the frequency domain. Extracted low-noise microwaves have been used in various fields that demand high-performance clock signals, such as time/frequency standards, very-long baseline interferometers, and radars. However, the noise characteristics of photocurrent pulses have not been extensively studied thus far. In this thesis, the attosecond-level timing jitter at the rising edge of photocurrent pulses was demonstrated using an electro-optical sampling-based timing detection method. Such low-jitter photocurrent pulses have been used as ultralow-noise clock signals in a variety of applications, including low-noise microwave generation, high-resolution time-of-flight detection, on-chip clock distribution networks, and radio telescope phase calibration.
