Altieri and Schnitzler (AS) document the “qspike” effect in the U.S. stock market, wherein an abnormal increase in capital expenditures in the fourth quarter, relative to the average capital expenditures from the first to three quarters, is associated with lower future returns. Following AS, we investigate whether the qspike effect exists in the Korean stock market. The findings are as follows: First, the qspike effect is negatively correlated with future stock returns. Second, while the qspike effect is linked to asset growth factors, it is not solely attributed to it. Lastly, we find that the qspike effect is amplified by low total assets, low trading volumes, and low debt levels.
