This study examines the effects of the Volatility Interruption (VI) mechanism introduced in the Korean market in September 2014 on market quality indicators such as volatility, bid-ask spread, and price discovery. Utilizing transactions and quotes data from 2013 to 2019, a total of 959 cases under analysis and 122 control cases are subjected to a Difference in Differences analysis technique and regression analysis. The results are as follows: The VI mechanism impact on a decrease in intraday volatility and bid-ask spreads immediately after VI event. However, during 2-minutes VI call auction session, price discovery process does not activate perfectly. Therefore, price discovery delay during the VI call auction. Moreover, the listing status of single stock futures does not influence underlying stocks’ market quality changes following VI. This suggests that, although VI results in a delay in price discovery due to trading pause, the intended goal through the mechanism can be considered achieved. Additionally, the study holds significance in attempting to indirectly analyze the impact of market fragmentation on market quality after the VI event in the Korean market.
