This study estimates carbon-transition risk and associated carbon premiums in the Korean stock market by analyzing the relationship between carbon emissions and stock returns. In the Korean stock market, there is a weak positive relationship between carbon emissions and stock returns, with no statistical significance in the relationship between the growth in carbon emissions and stock returns. However, when lagging the carbon emissions data by one year, both cases show a strong positive relationship. Additionally, after domestic and international events related to climate change, carbon premiums increase, reflecting investors' perceptions of carbon transition risk. These results imply that there are carbon premiums associated with carbon-transition risk in the Korean stock market and indicate that it takes time for investors to recognize carbon emissions as a significant risk. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of understanding the impact of investors’ perceptions of carbon-transition risk on stock returns.
