This research confirms the existence of news momentum in the Korean stock market and explores its potential applications. To achieve this, it empirically analyzes the phenomenon where the stock market exhibits an underreaction to corporate news using high-frequency data. It divides stock returns into news returns and non-news returns and reveals the tendency of news momentum, where prices move in the direction of the initial market reaction for a certain period after news announcements. Trading strategies based on news momentum generate significant excess returns, even after considering transaction costs. Furthermore, it discusses the causes of underreaction and its intersection with news text sentiment. In particular, it confirms the clear performance of news sentiment long-short portfolios through natural language processing.
