This study focuses on how the positiveness of video content affects its viewers’ information processing. More specifically, how different levels of positiveness of video clips influence individuals’ cognitive resource allocation during the viewing process. In order to find the effect of content positivity, this study devised an experiment based on LC4MP (Lang, 2006a), focusing on how media and its content affect consumers' cognitive processing of information. According to LC4MP, the valence and arousal caused by media content influence the allocation of how much cognitive resources are distributed for information processing. This study applied the idea proposed by LC4MP in the context of video viewing. Six video clips were created, which formed two groups according to their positivity level(high/low), and while subjects were watching each of them, their sweat production (physiological arousal) and heart rate (index of attention) were measured.
While physiological arousal was controlled, attention levels for high-positivity video clips were higher than those in low-positivity video clips. How the positive level of the video content affects the memory of the brand shown in the video clip was also investigated. The memory test results suggest that a higher level of video content leads to improved memory of corporate brands shown simultaneously.
